Isocapnic Training: Introducing the Respiratory Science for Performance
This session introduces the story of Isocapnic and the development of the Breathe Way Better (BWB) device. We’ll explore how decades of physiologic testing on thousands of athletes revealed the respiratory system as the most common performance limiter, and how the lack of effective training tools led to the creation of a novel, science-backed solution. Attendees will learn the fundamentals of respiratory muscle function, the importance of O₂/CO₂ balance, and how the BWB system empowers coaches to unlock untapped potential in their athletes.
ABOUT: I am the founder and CEO of The Isocapnic Respiratory Training System. I have been an endurance coach for 20 years.
I specialize in elite level triathlon, but also work with elite level mountain bikers, and world class CrossFitters. The methodology I use is based around understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses. I create programs that are positive, effective, and with integrity that train the weaknesses with science-backed methods into strengths. We do this by finding objective truths about the athlete through physiologic assessment.
A few years ago, after seeing there is a trend that most athletes are limiting their performance because of the way they breathe, I tried to find a way to effectively isolate and train the respiratory system. I could not find any device that would work for our needs. And so after many late night conversations with Dr Sellars (my mentor) and Alex (a close friend and thriving mind), we invented the Isocapnic Breathe Way Better Training System. This is a three pillared system that consists of the hardware, the software, and the curation of knowledge.

Beyond Training: Fixing the Biochemical Roadblocks That Limit Performance and Recovery
Endurance performance isn’t just about training harder — it’s about understanding what’s happening inside the athlete. This talk explores how hidden biochemical and physiological factors can limit propulsion, power, and resilience in endurance athletes. We’ll dive into how underlying pathologies, nutrient deficiencies, and inefficiencies in energy production pathways — from glycolysis to the Krebs cycle — can block optimal output. By combining insights from blood work, urine analysis, and sweat testing, we uncover the internal roadblocks that lead to heat accumulation, fatigue, and subpar race performance. Learn how identifying and correcting these biochemical constraints can transform an athlete’s ability to sustain power, manage heat, and truly go faster — from the inside out.
ABOUT: Dr. Tara Dunne, MA, ND, is the founder of Surpass Human Performance and a Naturopathic Doctor based in British Columbia. With over 15 years of experience in sports medicine and energy production medicine, she works with athletes across endurance and intermittent sports. Dr. Dunne helps identify and correct the biochemical and physiological factors that limit performance, bridging clinical diagnostics with high-performance sport to optimize energy pathways, recovery, and heat management for maximal athletic potential.
