The Jaw and its Effects on the Entire Body

If you've ever treated a client with TMJ pain or dysfunction, you know it can be one of the most frustrating and complex areas of the body to deal with. With approximately 12% of the population suffering from tempero-mandibular dysfunction, our industry is in need of a fresh -- and more importantly, integrated -- approach to studying, assessing, diagnosing, treating, and rehabbing the temporomandibular joint. 

The Stomatognathic System

The stomatognathic system is an anatomical system comprising the teeth, jaws, and associated soft tissues.

Course Objectives

  • Identify the primary and secondary muscles of mastication, along with their actions and innervations 
  • Note the movements of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) on their axes of movement 
  • Examine the TMJ’s participation in the stomatognathic system. 
  • Assess and palpate the function of participants’ TMJs on three different planes. 
  • Discuss the tongue’s action, innervation, and functional participation in the stomatognathic system. 
  • Assess and palpate participants’ tongues in relation to the hyoid and jaw within the stomatognathic system. 
  • Discuss the TMJ connection to swallowing and vocalization. 
  • Discuss the two major different types of Bruxism and their local and systemic approaches to assessment and correction. 
  • Discuss various popular dental devices until they create changes in the stomatognathic system And full body proprioceptive systems.
  • Name common disorders related to TMJ dysfunction, including systemic conditions and faulty full-body movement patterns.
  • Identify and comprehend the clinical pearls of global functional anatomy knowledge that are clinically relevant
  • Palpate important landmarks on structures that prove useful in assessments 
  • Visualize the structures in interactive formats, such as nerve pathways and motions
  • Demonstrate assessments based upon planar correct and faulty movement strategy 
  • Explore case studies, including shared clinical cases and volunteer demonstrations

Instructors

Dr. Kathy Dooley

Dr. Kathy Dooley is a rehabilitative chiropractor who uses functional anatomy and movement analysis to educate and treat her patients. She utilizes her anatomy and rehabilitative knowledge to help students, colleagues, and patients seek the sources of pain, not just the sites.

Dr. Dooley also teaches gross anatomy as an adjunct professor for five professional institutions: Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College, St. George’s Medical School, NYU College of Dentistry, and Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Dooley is also the cofounder and lead instructor of Immaculate Dissection Seminars, LLC, an online and in-person seminar series teaching functional anatomy and human movement assessment and correctives.

Dr. Dooley is also a worldwide lead instructor for levels I, II and III of Neurokinetic Therapy Seminars, LLC

She writes for her own website, www.drdooleynoted.com. She is also a reviewer for the scientific journal, Clinical Anatomy.
