Hybrid: Self-Paced Online, followed by In-Person

Part 1: Self-Paced Online

The highly acclaimed 18 Hours online course “The Shoulder: An Integrated Approach”

Part 2: Live In Person

Twelve Hours of in-person coursework featuring clinical case scenarios, round-table discussions, and hands-on lab sessions that will hone your diagnostic skills and lock in the most effective programming for a variety of clinical conditions, including frozen shoulder, acute-to-chronic rotator cuff and/or biceps tendinopathy, instability, ACJ and SCJ dysfunction, and coordination/motor control dysfunction.

Part 3: Structured Mentorship

One-on-One and Small Group Mentorship Program: In the 2-months following the course, you will meet with Dr. Maxwell to discuss clinical cases from your clinic. Pulling from the group's clinical cases and the dialogue created from each, Dr. Maxwell will lead a live online small group mentoring session where we break down the anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, pathophysiology, assessment parameters, and treatment algorithms for each case.

Want in?

There is one inclusion criterion to attending this course, and that is: Your mission is to be the best clinician you can be with the ultimate goal of raising the bar (your bar, my bar, ‘their’ bar) of patient care.

How it all fits together

Online: 20 Hours

18 Hours of self-paced coursework, including

  • The Shoulder: An Integrated Approach to Manual Therapy and Rehab, and
  • Scapular Dyskinesis and the Shoulder: A Clinical & Critical Review

90-minutes live online

  • Group case presentations and Q&A

30-minutes live online

  • 1-on-1 post-course mentorship session

In Person: 12 Hours

We will move through the in-person course using clinical case scenarios generated from real patients with real outcomes. Each clinical case scenario will feature practical and applied content, unique skills, and principles of rehabilitation for the unique patient presentation.

Each clinical case scenario will highlight primary principles of clinical reasoning:

  • DDx and identifying the most probable pathoanatomical, functional and pathophysiological diagnosis.
  • Identify provocative and pain-free patterns to establish optimal entry points for building movement competency and quality, load tolerance, and capacity.
  • Backdoor rehab to optimize everything - activation, and engagement of all that is available to optimize health habits so you and your patients stop swimming upstream.
  • Training Movement and Motor Control – Make the general specific and specific general (hint: it’s not about the exercise)
  • Know when to leverage manual therapy for optimal outcomes and when it may be irrelevant.
  • Managing expectations, outcomes, and prognosis.

Each clinical case scenario will highlight specific skills – manual techniques, exercise applications for motor control, stability, strength, stamina, load tolerance, and/or functional capacity.

The Outline

Online Component (Self-Paced)

The online component will include automatic enrollment in the following two online courses by Dr Maxwell:

The Shoulder: An Integrated Approach to Manual Therapy and Rehab

Scapular Dyskinesis and the Shoulder: A Clinical & Critical Review

These courses include approximately 8 hours of lecture that MUST be completed prior to attending the in-person section of the course. We highly encourage you to complete 100% of both courses before attending the in-person section, as there will be minimal time for review and case studies applications will begin immediately on the weekend. However, the remainder of each course can be completed up to 2 months after completion of the in-person section of the course.

Hour 4: Primary Scapular Dyskinesis, Motor Control Dysfunction with Secondary Tendinopathy

Hour 5: Frozen Shoulder, Adhesive Capsulitis of Unknown Origin

Instructors

Dr Michael Maxwell

Dr. Michael Maxwell has been a fitness, health, exercise rehabilitation and manual therapy nerd since 1998. As a personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, kinesiologist, and Chiropractor, he has sought out key mentors, courses, and conferences to accelerate the acquisition of knowledge and skills necessary to help his clients and patients.

Frustrated by the lack of practical knowledge and skills provided in his Exercise Science undergraduate degree, and inspired by the extra-curricular conferences and courses he had previously attended, Dr. Maxwell began facilitating workshops and seminars that featured practical, hands-on content, taught by industry leaders. This is what led to the formation of Somatic Senses Education. Since 2003, Dr. Maxwell has organized well over 250 continuing education courses throughout Canada featuring industry leaders such as Lorimer Moseley, Donald Murphy, Stuart McGill, Pavel Kolar, and the outstanding Prague School Physios, Clayton Skaggs, Brett Winchester, Michael Shacklock, Dale Buchberger, Jack Miller, Clare Frank, Robert Lardner, Mark Finch, Charlie Weingroff, and many more! His mission is simple: provide evidence-informed, practical, and world-class continuing education featuring industry-leading clinicians, educators, and researchers, with the ultimate goal of improving the standards of patient care!
