What is Performance Therapy?

Performance Therapy is truly the only system which has been conceived, implemented, and refined in a high performance environment amongst an elite athletic population.

Performance Therapy is a therapeutic approach that aims to identify movement patterns that may hinder performance and utilizes various interventions to promote change. The key pillars of Performance Therapy are observation, intervention, and reinforcement. It is recognized that Performance Therapy is relevant at all stages, including rehabilitation, sports/activities, and recovery. Therapists may use non-hands-on modalities and manual techniques to support the individual's goals.

In practice, Performance Therapy is an ongoing collaborative process involving the athlete, coach, and/or therapist. They work together to normalize function by integrating therapeutic interventions into the athlete's sporting movement practice. This results in performance improvement by affecting technical proficiency and mechanical efficiency.

  • 1. Observe

Observe functional movements and patterns within the athlete training environment.

  • 2. Treat

  • 3. Reinforce

Deploy regionally specific exercises to re-establish correct feedback loops and optimize movement.

  • 4. Re-Observe

Re-observe the functional movement pattern where restriction, pain, or asymmetry was  recognized to evaluate change.

Andy Burke

Performance Therapist - Orlando Magic (NBA)

Andy's journey in the realm of professional sports spans over 25 years. Hailing from Wales, Andy began his career as a badminton athlete, representing his nation for 8 years, culminating with the 1998 Malaysian Commonwealth Games. Transitioning from athlete to coach, Andy played a pivotal role in establishing the Welsh Junior High Performance Centers, integrating sports science testing, and delivering day-to-day coaching. In 2000, he took on the position of Welsh Junior National Badminton Team coach, and at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, was Commonwealth Games Badminton Team Manager.

Fuelling his passion for enhancing athletic performance and performance optimization, Andy pursued further education, obtaining a Post Graduate degree in Sport and Coaching from the University of Wales. His commitment to holistic athlete care led him to qualify as a Sports Massage Therapist and later as an Osteopath in 2008. He also went on to study for a Post Graduate Health & Exercise at Nottingham University and is currently undertaking Post Graduate Psychology at the University of Derby.

During this time he began work with British Athletics, attending the 2004 Olympics and working with the Gold Medal 4x100m team through to 2008. From 2008 through to London 2012 he began collaborating with legendary track coach Dan Pfaff and renowned chiropractor Gerry Ramogida employing innovative methodologies from their backgrounds, combined with skills learned from Dr Guy Voyer, to propel athletes to the 2012 Olympics podium, including Greg Rutherford's gold in the long jump.

He helped further cement the performance therapy philosophy and was the Lead Performance Therapist going into the 2016 Rio Olympics helping Greg Rutherford and Sophie Hitchon to Bronze. Between 2012 and 2016, he played an instrumental role in helping coaches and athletes secure numerous European, World, and Olympic medals for British Athletics.

In 2016, Andy crossed the Atlantic to Boston, where he collaborated with shoe company groups such as Saucony and Adidas. His consultancy extended to Harvard Track and Field, where he played a pivotal role in nurturing the talent of Gabby Thomas, guiding her to NCAA finals and subsequent Olympic and World Silver Medals. In 2018, Andy relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, to help spearhead the inaugural PUMA sprints group, where his guidance saw every athlete, from nine different countries, qualify for the 2019 World Championships, winning multiple medals.

Currently with the Orlando Magic Team, Andy's expertise has been instrumental in optimizing player performance, working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Most recently, Andy helped Canadian superstar athlete, Andre DeGrasse, win his 7th Gold in Paris, and worked closely with the only French Track Medalist, Cyréna Samba-Mayela. Beyond the realm of sports, Andy has lent his expertise to diverse industries, ranging from English Sevens Rugby to PGA golfers, musicians, and business leaders.
