What is Integrated Patterning?

Scientific research is a moving target, but within that construct one truism remains; movement-based problems require movement-based solutions.
In this course, you will learn how to best utilize the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) to accurately identify, categorize and eliminate movement pattern dysfunctions through a multi-modal treatment approach. Using evidence informed protocols, Integrated Patterning teaches participants to correct movement deficits using:
  • Myofascial/soft tissue therapy: integrating concepts from dry needling and Stecco's work on Fascial Manipulation, Integrated Patterns teaches a system of soft tissue manipulation that promotes fascial chain plasticity and resolves passive restriction to movement.
  • Mobility-Based Exercise: to imprint new ranges of motion and gain optimal articular function.
  • Movement Competency Exercises: to establish foundational stability and motor control to attain ideal movement patterns.
  • Exercises that build Capacity: to increase the thresholds (load/speed/fatigue) in which patients can maintain ideal movement patterns (movement competency), thus building resilience.

Who should take Integrated Patterning?

  • Chiropractors
  • Physiotherapists
  • Athletic Therapists
  • Strength and conditioning coaches
  • Osteopaths
  • Personal trainers
  • Massage therapists
  • Facial stretch therapists

Is Integrated Patterning a technique?

Integrated Patterning is a technique however it more closely resembles a strategy in that it is a combination of various therapeutic inputs (manual, active mobility, and corrective exercises) to correct movement patterns.

What is "Integrated" in this course?

Integration in the sense that we are integrating different modalities (manual, active mobility, corrective exercise), and integrating anatomical regions to perform a full movement pattern (for instance, a squat). Integrated is also how this course integrates with our other courses in a system

What is so important about patterns?

Patterns and sequences are how all biological structures are organized. Nothing occurs in isolation. As humans we have mastered the art of compensatory movement. The issue with compensation is that a sequence no longer has the correct movement occurring at certain joints (some are increased while others are decreased) and our soft tissues now have to perform differently based on these new areas of articular motion. Increased and inappropriate demand leads to an accumulation of damage which culminates in pathology (tendon injury, joint synovitis, repetitive strain). Treating the the area of pain will not resolve the mechanism that lead to injury - that is what Integrated Patterning does. It finds the pathomechanics of atraumatic injuries.

What makes this method different than others?

We use the SFMA as a framework as it is the most widely used and easily implemented movement assessment system. This allows you to share information between practitioners by speaking the common vernacular of SFMA. You do not need prior experience with SFMA to attend or make use of the information learned in Integrated Patterning - we will teach you everything you need to know. (Certification in SFMA is not provided by attending Integrated Patterning. )

Will we be doing manual therapy?

Yes, but it is not mandatory if you are not permitted. You can show your patients/clients where they can roll, or where you can use a soft tissue mobility tool or percussive device if you would rather not, cannot, perform the manual therapy component.

Is this course Evidence Based?

Yes it is. When Forward-thinking/novel techniques utilize evidence it is often basic sciences research, which Integrated Patterning relies upon heavily. Our reference list is provided in your manual. Privately owned techniques/systems are rarely if ever the subject of randomized trials.
