This two-day, hands-on course will explore the latest research on concussions (mTBI) and give participants a framework to use with clients suffering from concussion-like symptoms.  Designed specifically for Musculoskeletal, Manual, and Exercise Therapists, this course will be highly applicable and useable for general practitioners who want a toolkit to assess, guide, educate, intervene, and rehab concussion clients.

Concussion is one of the most common sports injuries across all age categories, accounting for 1 of every 10 sports-related injuries in children and young adults. Up to one-third of those who suffer a concussive event will experience prolonged symptoms for over three months post-injury.

Rest has been traditionally used as the primary therapy for concussions. However, decades of recent research has supported a much more active, involved approach. In fact, research now suggests that long-term rest after a concussion increases the probability of prolonged symptomology. If a client walks into your clinic with concussion-like symptoms or reporting a concussive event, watch-and-wait is no longer acceptable, nor evidence-informed. 

Many clinicians have been trained on sideline protocols such as the implementation of the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool. But most of our concussion tool kits are limited to the acute stage, shortly after the event. We've pulled them from the field, and maybe even from school or work. But research shows that the SCAT normalizes within 2 to 5 day after injury. What do we do after that? This course aims to give the clinician a guiding framework to use in these instances.

This course will review the pathophysiology of concussion (called the "neurometabolic cascade"), the most common evidence-based assessments of concussed patients, and applied rehabilitation procedures. At the end of this course, participants will have a foundational framework for assessing, managing, tracking, and rehabbing concussed clients, focusing on the aspects of concussions that we are uniquely trained to address. 

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Define concussion in functional and metabolic terminology.
  • Describe the mechanisms leading to a concussion.
  • List inclusion criteria for ruling in/out a potential concussion.
  • Describe the signs and symptoms of a concussion, knowing which are most common.
  • Generally understand the Neurometabolic Cascade of Concussion and its implications. 
  • Simplify the Neurometabolic Cascade for patient education purposes.
  • Describe generally expected recovery timelines from concussion as it relates to common symptoms and assessments.
  • Identify, describe, and assess for the primary domains of Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS)
  • Understanding of all pertinent anatomical and functional domains that are implicated in PCS.

Performance Objectives

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Take a meaningful history, specific to a suspected concussion and ongoing related symptoms.
  • Perform basic examinations, assessments, and tests for patients experiencing concussion-like symptoms.
  • Administer the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test or similar standardized test.
  • Administer a Vestibulo Oculomotor Screen (VOMS) and Intepret results.
  • Categorize clients with PCS into primary domains of dysfunction for the purposes of prioritizing intervention.
  • Use extended screening and assessment tools as indicated, based on each client presentation.
  • Administer and track the progress of clients using validated symptom measurement tools (such as RPQ or PCSS)
  • Prescribe appropriate levels of activity and/or rest, specific to the stage of healing for each client. 
  • Stage meaningful, foundational interventions based on primary patient presentation, history, and assessment. 
  • Use modern, widely accepted guidelines to build and administer individualized return-to-work and return-to-play programs. 
  • Answer common questions regarding lay-person beliefs surrounding concussion (helmets, rest until better, loss of consciousness, etc)

Dr Benjamin Stevens

Dr Stevens has been in private practice in Kelowna, BC for 10 years, focusing heavily on active and athletic populations. During a time when he had experienced multiple concussions himself, he became frustrated with the lack of local expertise and seemingly disparate opinions around every single aspect of concussions, from basic science to assessment and rehab. Both for himself and for his patients, he has now undertaken many years of study on the topic, including coursework, literature reviews, and constant scientific updates. He has taught scientific concussion principles to multiple large organizations around the world, including sports teams, private businesses, regulatory bodies, and government organizations.

Dr Stevens has been teaching continuing education courses since 2012 when he began teaching for Rocktape Canada. Shortly thereafter, he joined Somatic Senses Education as a Co-Owner and operator to deliver diverse and high-quality continuing education around North America. Based primarily in Western Canada, Dr Stevens now spends most of his spare time reading, adventuring in the mountains, and sleeping under the stars with his beautiful wife and daughter.
